Understanding Supported Independent Living

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Independence is something everyone wants to feel as they're going through life. It's not always easy for someone disabled to live independently, though.

Regaining independence might be possible with the help of the SIL program. The Supported Independent Living program provides support to disabled Australians. It does this by using an NDIS program. It can make the difference between living independently or not. Disability housing seems more affordable when you're a part of the program.

What Is SIL and How Does it Work?

The Supported Independent Living program provides support to disabled individuals living independently. Many of them wouldn't be able to live independently without the program's support. If you qualify for it, you can request your funds through the NDIS.

They'll determine whether you're a good fit for the program. Then, you'll receive them on your NDIS plan if you qualify. Apply the funds to your rent while staying in disability housing.

All the funds may be used to pay for living costs, including housing. The amount of support you receive changes depending on your living situation. People living in HCOL areas may receive more on their checks than others.

It's also possible to use the funds to pay for shared housing. Choosing a shared housing arrangement would make it easier to remain social.

The SIL program also provides support to people trying to attend community events. Someone may be able to help give you rides to social occasions, making it easier to get some interaction.

Why Pick SIL

Applying for the SIL program could help you begin a new life of independence. All the funds are in addition to your other benefits. So, you may use them to pay to live somewhere you couldn't afford before. Living in disability housing could help you qualify for the program.

You don't have to live in a single-family home if you're using the program, either. The program allows you to use funds on shared housing, so you can have housemates.

If you'd like to be more independent, applying to SIL could help make it possible.
